Students at the Knockevin Special Needs School in Downpatrick teamed up with the Rotary Club of Comber to make twenty red squirrel boxes.

It is generally known that the native red squirrel has been losing out to the grey squirrel; indeed the red has already disappeared from many parts of the country.

The boxes, designed and supplied pre-cut by Comber Rotary cannot be accessed by the greys, so giving the reds a fighting chance of surviving.

The young people got so interested in the project that they actually researched red squirrels and produced an impressive Powerpoint presentation on the subject.

The boxes were recently presented to Shanna Rice of Ulster Wild Life. The next point of call for the students is to visit Tollymore Forest Park when the boxes have been sited in the hope of seeing them in use.
