The Rotary Club of Comber recently welcomed Grace Williams from Northern Ireland Air Ambulance as speaker.

The Northern Ireland Air Ambulance service started in 2017 and has already attended over 750 incidents over all six counties.

Based at The Maze near Lisburn, the air ambulance can reach the furthest spot in Northern Ireland in 25 minutes. In an average day there will be 600 calls for an ambulance, and a few of these will be trauma calls necessitating the air ambulance.

The organisation owns one helicopter and has a second on hire as backup, and their team includes 16 doctors on rota with 6 full time paramedics and an engineer.

On any flight, there will be a doctor, the pilot and a paramedic (often doubling as co-pilot). The cost is considerable at 5.500 daily all of which has to be raised without Government funding.

The Rotary Club of Comber donated 1,000 from their charity fund.
