The Rotary Club of comber - News Detail
COMBER ROTARY AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
The Rotary Club of Comber meets every Monday in McBride’s on the Square at 6:30 pm, throughout the year, the Rotarians organise events aimed at giving service to communities at home and abroad.
With a membership of around 30, the Rotary Club of Comber becomes involved in Local, National and International causes for example:
• £1,000 was donated to the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance. • £2,000 was donated to Everyday Harmony (N.I. Music Therapy Trust). • £1.000 was donated to the Crumlin Hospital in Dublin to help the refit of bedrooms for the parents of children from all over Ireland, North and South, recuperating from heart surgery. • £2,000 was donated to Kids4School (safe water for Africa). • £1,500 was raised for the worldwide polio eradication programme.
To this end, the annual Remembrance Tree in December is a good example of how we provide a service to the community and also raise funds. In recent times, annual charitable income has averaged around £9,000, and we thank the public for their ongoing support. On the international scene, the club has been investing in Micro-finance loans for poor communities in the third world. In conjunction with the charity LEND WITH CARE, the club has invested £4,500 to over 1,000 family members creating some 100 jobs. Much of this investment has already been paid back and reinvested.
Locally a lot is done with youth programmes: • Mock interviews for school leavers • Youth Leadership Development Competition providing the lifetime opportunity to debate in the European Parliament. • Working with Ulster Wild Life and providing primary and secondary school children with the means of assembling homes for our wildlife e.g. red squirrel boxes, barn owl boxes, hedgehog boxes, bug hotels and bird boxes. • Mentoring with Youth Enterprise • Just One Life a school-based Road Safety Awareness Programme
