Working for a polio-free world.

Help Rotary eradicate polio

In 1985 Rotary International started a campaign to immunise the children of the world against polio.

Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (the largest public health initiative the world has ever known) that has spanned 200 counties, utilised 20 million volunteers, immunised over 2 billion children, probably spared 5 million from disability and averted more than a million deaths.

Rotarians in polio-free countries actively partner with Rotarians in polio endemic and high risk countries to help provide vaccines, the essential social mobilisation and surveillance.

In December 2007, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the Rotary Foundation a challenge gift of US$100 Million.

Rotary Districts are challenged to raise an equivalent amount over the three years to December 2010. In effect this is a District contribution equivalent to $1,000 per Rotary Club in each of the three years.

ROTARY YOUNG CHEF 2008

in association with Filippo Berio Olive Oil

Thomas Souter from Yorkshire won the 2008 Rotary Young Chef Final at Westminster Kingsway College, London.

He wins a trip to Tuscany to visit the olive groves and sample the delights of Italian cuisine with Filippo Berio Olive Oil (see Anna's Diary on the left for an account from 2007 winner) and a day at the Fifteen Restaurant (founded by Jamie Oliver).  In addition Tom received the RIBI Rose Bowl Trophy plus £250.

Tom prepared a stunning three course meal and wowed the judges with his flavours and presentation.  The chefs at Westminster Kingsway College said they had never seen such good food from students so young.

BUT WHY "ROTARY YOUNG CHEF"?

Rotary and our associates believe that cooking a healthy meal is an important life skill.  The government are now focusing on teaching all young people to cook in schools and our competition supports that initiative.

Rotary Young Chef aims to encourage young people to:

  • Develop cookery skills

  • Develop food presentation skills

  • Consider Healthy Eating options

  • Prove their organisational and planning skills

  • Prove their ability to cope in a demanding situation
